What Is Psychiatry?
Psychiatry is a medical specialty focused on diagnosing, treating, and preventing mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders. Unlike therapists or counselors, psychiatrists are physicians (MD or DO) who can provide comprehensive care that may include both psychotherapy and medication management.

What to Expect When Working With a Psychiatrist
-
Initial Evaluation
Your first visit is a detailed consultation where your psychiatrist will learn about your history, symptoms, lifestyle, and goals. This helps create a clear picture of your mental health needs. -
Personalized Treatment Plan
Based on the evaluation, your psychiatrist will recommend a tailored treatment plan. This may include therapy, medication, or a combination of approaches. -
Ongoing Care and Support
Psychiatry is not a one-time visit. Follow-up appointments help monitor progress, adjust treatments as needed, and ensure you are supported throughout your journey.
